Today is the National Day of Sweden and a perfect opportunity to reflect on geography in the Casa curriculum… OMS students start learning Geography in Casa by being introduced to the globe, and then control maps. At this time, we start teaching them about the people/cultures and fauna of the various continents/countries, as well as the language to go with the maps.

We introduce the child to flags in Casa too. We start with the Canadian flag and countries closest to us but we also capitalize on cultures and traditions that are personally significant to the children in the class, for example a country of origin, where family resides, places they’ve visited etc.. Eventually the child colours and labels the flags and makes flag books before moving on to maps.

In Elementary, students build on their knowledge by adding all of the country names, capitals, rivers, lakes, mountain ranges etc.
